Lecture Seventeen of the Forum of Eminent Persons-Presentation by Professor Huang Biao of the University of Alberta, Canada



 

On the morning of September 12, at the invitation of Professor Yang Xu, an academician of the Canadian Academy of Engineering, editor-in-chief of the IFAC Journal Control Engineering Practice, and professor Huang Biao of the University of Alberta, Alberta, Canada, gave a presentation entitled "basic methods of machine learning and their applications in Control processes" in conference room 1104 of the electromechanical information building.This lecture chaired by Professor Yang Xu, and  Associate Dean Professor Peng Kaixiang, dean Assistant Professor Ding Dawei, as well as many teachers and more than 40 students attended the seminar.

At the beginning of the lecture, Professor Yang Xu introduced professor Huang Biao's academic experience and achievements to the present teachers and students. Professor Peng Kaixiang extended a warm welcome to professor Huang's visit and delivered a speech.

In this talk, Professor Huang, from the History of artificial intelligence, gave a detailed account of the development of machine learning and the main research results obtained so far. This paper briefly introduced the basic principles of deep learning core algorithm and reinforcement learning algorithm, vividly demonstrated the application of reinforcement learning, and illustrated the significance of reinforcement learning in process control. The structure of the full report was clear, rigorous logic and easy to understand. After the end of the report,the teachers and students present benefit a lot.

During the discussion and question session, the teachers and students present actively asked questions, Professor Huang Biao patiently answered one by one, and believed that many questions are very valuable. In this report meeting, Professor Huang Biao and Automation College teachers and students have a cordial academic exchanges, enriched the knowledge of students, broaden their horizons in academic and scientific research. Finally, the report will be completed in the thunderous applause of all the teachers and students.

Brief introduction of the presenter:

Biao Huang received his Ph.D. degree in Process Control from the University of Alberta, Canada, in 1997. He held MSc degree (1986) and BSc degree (1983) in Automatic Control from the Beijing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics. He joined the University of Alberta in 1997 as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Chemical and Materials Engineering and is currently a Full Professor, and NSERC Senior Industrial Research Chair in Control of Oil Sands Processes. He is an IEEE Fellow, Fellow of the Canadian Academy of Engineering, and Fellow of the Chemical Institute of Canada. He is a recipient of many awards including Alexander von Humboldt Research Fellowship from Germany, Best Paper award from IFAC Journal of Process Control, APEGA Summit Award in Research Excellence, and Bantrel Award in Design and Industrial Practice, etc. He has published five books and many.
